The Shedding Process Part 1

Spring has arrived... which means it's time to de-fur the horse. UGH. It's a slow, hairy process, but I bought some M-T-G to help speed it up.

It was $20, but apparently it really helps and every horse owner I know recommends it.

So Thursday I went to drop off feed for Penny (I didn't have any grooming supplies) and she looked like this:
I've had people tell me that she looks sick, but trust me when I say it's completely normal for her.

Saturday (yesterday) I gave her a bath which included 5 different products that help speed up the shedding AND help with hair/coat growth.

Here is her before picture:

So this was the process:

After doing the best I could to remove all the winter coat hair of of her body, I hosed her down and applied Cowboy Magic shampoo and rubbed it in real good in her skin and coat. (I got a 16 oz bottle of it at Gebo's)

This was only 3/4 of the hair from just the left half of her body...

Next, I used the conditioner from Mane 'n Tail (you can find it at any feed/tack store) and applied it the same way, but not rinsing it out.

I repeated the same thing on the other side and rinsed out the conditioner on both sides once I was finished.

I sprayed her mane and tail with Mane 'n Tail Detangler before brushing it, and it really helps. It makes it all smooth and easy to finger brush.

After all that I rubbed the M-T-G into her tail bone and the places where she had dry, itchy skin.
For her tail, I braided it after I rubbed in the M-T-G so it would stay in longer.  I rubbed some into her mane as well.

In the end, I sprayed her body with fly spray to help keep the flies away.

Now, I didn't get very good after pictures, but here's what I got for after...

Sorry, but like I said, I didn't get great pictures this time, but you can see her braided tail.

Helloooo

Only horse owners know how difficult it is to get a picture with the horse's ears up...

More to come soon.
Until then,
